Adenylate energy charge during fruiting body formation by Myxococcus xanthus.

The adenylate energy charge of developing Myxococcus xanthus cells was measured. The energy charge of vegetative cells (0.81) does not change significantly during the course of fruiting body formation. Furthermore, myxospores, which are resistant, resting cells present in the fruiting body, have a relatively high energy charge (0.73).

Phase transitions during fruiting body formation in Myxococcus xanthus

The formation of a collectively moving group benefits individuals within a population in a variety of ways such as ultra-sensitivity to perturbation, collective modes of feeding, and protection from environmental stress. While some collective groups use a single organizing principle, others can dynamically shift the behavior of the group by modifying the interaction rules at the individual leve...

Isoprenoids are essential for fruiting body formation in Myxococcus xanthus.

It was recently shown that Myxococcus xanthus harbors an alternative and reversible biosynthetic pathway to isovaleryl coenzyme A (CoA) branching from 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA. Analyses of various mutants in these pathways for fatty acid profiles and fruiting body formation revealed for the first time the importance of isoprenoids for myxobacterial development.

Pattern formation: fruiting body morphogenesis in Myxococcus xanthus.

When Myxococcus xanthus cells are exposed to starvation, they respond with dramatic behavioral changes. The expansive swarming behavior stops and the cells begin to aggregate into multicellular fruiting bodies. The cell-surface-associated C-signal has been identified as the signal that induces aggregation. Recently, several of the components in the C-signal transduction pathway have been identi...

Directional reversals enable Myxococcus xanthus cells to produce collective one-dimensional streams during fruiting-body formation.

The formation of a collectively moving group benefits individuals within a population in a variety of ways. The surface-dwelling bacterium Myxococcus xanthus forms dynamic collective groups both to feed on prey and to aggregate during times of starvation. The latter behaviour, termed fruiting-body formation, involves a complex, coordinated series of density changes that ultimately lead to three...
